How we score hotel breakfast
Every score starts with guest reviews, not marketing copy. Otto's insight engine reads each hotel's recent reviews and extracts what guests actually report about the morning meal: the quality and variety of the food, the value, whether breakfast is included or a paid add-on, and how it holds up during the peak 7–9am rush. Those signals are distilled into a single 1–5 breakfast score, with recent stays weighted more heavily than older ones.
Evidence threshold: a hotel is ranked only once at least 10 of its reviews mention breakfast, so no score rests on one delighted (or one hangry) guest. Across the 11 cities scored so far, that filter narrows 3408 reviewed properties down to the 500 ranked hotels.
Scores map to three tiers. Worth getting up for (3.5+ / 5): reviewers consistently praise the food, the spread, and the value. Fine in a pinch (3.0–3.4): edible and convenient, with minor, usually specific gripes. Grab coffee elsewhere (below 3.0): complaints are frequent enough that we suggest finding coffee and food elsewhere.
