How we score hotel wifi

Every score starts with guest reviews, not marketing copy. Otto's insight engine reads each hotel's recent reviews and extracts what guests actually report about the connection: observed speeds, drop-outs mid-call, floor-by-floor dead zones, router upgrades, and whether “free wifi” hides a paid fast tier. Those signals are distilled into a single 1–5 work-wifi score, with recent stays weighted more heavily than older ones.

Evidence threshold: a hotel is ranked only once at least 10 of its reviews mention wifi, so no score rests on one angry (or one lucky) guest. Across the 11 cities scored so far, that filter narrows 2066 reviewed properties down to the 463 ranked hotels.

Scores map to three tiers. Work-ready (3.5+ / 5): reviewers consistently report wifi that holds video calls, VPNs, and a full day of work. Usually fine (3.0–3.4): solid for most work with minor, usually localized catches. Bring a hotspot (below 3.0): complaints are frequent enough that we suggest packing a backup connection.

This is review-derived, not a speed test: it measures whether the wifi held up for real working guests, which is the question a speed snapshot can't answer.
